This is the f irst part of an on-going set of articles on Optical Technologies. Superior Access Solutions is a vendor Agnostic solutions provider, while the intent is to present the material in a general/generic format, we will acknowledge the information that we use from our industry contacts and our industry partners, we will also include on occasion material from our customers, with their approval.
Superior Access Solutions staff has years of experience to include designing optical products, engineering voice, data and video solutions over optical networks. SAS provides direct "Turn Key" optical installation project management in conjunction with vetted vendors who can also provide technology upgrades and insertions into existing systems.
We will be using key words throughout this series as we cover the leading edge technologies and the available technologies that we are using and seeing in today's optical networks.

Optical "keywords"
Working in the industry is like learning another language, my wife feels I am speaking Greek half the time (and who is to say I am not). This series will include references to the following:
- WDM
DWDM CDWM EDFA Dispersion Shifter Splitter Mux OTDR SFP Bi-Directional over Fiber SDI/HDSDI ECL+ Switch Fabric for Cross-Connects
Additional sections will focus on RF and Video on Glass and we will describe the various applications within Layers 1, 2, 3, and 4 as we must consider all of these layers when designing an end-to-end system.

Optical Technology - Network Delivery Methods
We are finding that in order to address the future needs, and to a large extend the current needs of our customers, an end-to-end optical network will be required.
Having said that, it is not possible at all times to have the complete optical network, many times the terran will dictate an alternative transport method. As shown, there is a need to extend an optical connection to a remote location using a microwave link.
